The vest is a garment that is worn on the upper body and must be adjusted. It lacks sleeves and, in most cases, ends near the waist. Any given vest can be simple or ornate or for pleasure or luxury. Sometimes, however, a vest is worn over a short or long sleeve shirt. There are many types of vests, made from a wide variety of materials, which fulfill various functions and purposes and allow variation both within cultures and across cultures. A vest can be closed at the front and placed on the head or it can contain several front materials such as buttons or zippers.

The vests became shorter, finished at the waist and were constructed similarly to the coat. This way of styling the vest was also popular in the nineteenth century throughout the arrival of the modern three-piece suit. To let the shirt look through, the collar of the vest was left unmade. At the end of the 19th century, it became popular to use embroidery and brocade material.
